Absztrakt (kivonat): Lipót Óváry arrived in Naples in 1861 as a soldier of Garibaldi. Afterwards, at the encouragement of Bartholomeo Capasso, he began his historical research in the library and archival collections of Naples which had not been studied from a Hungarian point of view. From 1870 onwards, on behalf of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, he systematically researched the collections of Naples and its surroundings. His most important results were initially related to the Kingdom of Hungary’s relations with Italy in the Angevine period, and then, while researching the Farnese Archives in Naples, he discovered a set of diplomatic documents from the pontificate of Pope Paul III. By working on these documents, Óváry wrote his name into the historiography of Hungarian historical research in the Vatican. After his return to Hungary in 1876, he became vice-archivist and later chief archivist of the National Archives, but his research on the Vatican did not stop there, and he participated in the Monumenta Vaticana Hungariae series. He also made several attempts at research in the Vatican archives, the closest he came to the Cortile del Belvedere was in 1879, but this project was not realised. Meanwhile, Óváry continued writing for the press, and as a permanent publicist in the press department of the Prime Minister’s Office, he regularly wrote to Italian and French newspapers about fake news and attacks because of nationalities, mainly Romanian. He participated in Hungarian and international academic life, was a member of several academies, associations and societies, and gave lectures at international conferences of historians. However, since his scholarly works were written mainly in Hungarian, his work is little known to international scholars of church history.
